What are essential oils?

I get asked all of the time what exactly are essential oils and are they safe to use?  Today, I have decided to answer those questions for everyone.

What are essential oils?

Have you ever enjoyed the scent of flowers, trees, grass, fruit and vegetables?  If you have then you have experienced, what is known as the aromatic part of essential oils.  The scent can be powerful and yet beautiful at the same time.  The essential oils are what give the plants their distinctive smells, and they can protect the plant along with help in the plants pollination. The oils can be found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of the plant.   Essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment and health-care practices.

The physical and chemical properties that make up the aroma of a essential oils allow the scent to quickly move through the air and directly interact with you sensors in your nose.  This makes essential oils ideal to use in aromatherapy, which can help maintain a healthy mind and body.  The type of compounds  that are present in essential oils determine the oils aroma and the benefits of that particular oil.

Just a note that even with pure essential oils, the composition of that oil varies depending on the tie of day, season, geographic location, method and duration of distillation, year grown and the weather, therefore please exercise caution when you are using essential oils.

Essential oils can be used for wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications.  You ca use them single or in a blend depending on what you want to use it for.

Are essential oils safe?

Yes, they are safe to use.  You need to read the labels and follow the directions on them.  Some need to be mixed with a carrier oil (apricot, olive, grape seed, jojoba, caster, almond and fractionated coconut) before topical application. 

Some oils can be digested and you will need to read the label to make sure you can digest them.  I recommend getting 100% therapeutic grade essential oils. I also recommend looking at other key indicators of a company's essential oils quality.  Though keep in mind some companies provide details on their site about the oils and some companies can be misleading with their terms.  Just take caution. 

What companies do you recommend?  

It depends on what you want to use the oils for.  If they are just for aromatherapy, then you can use Eden's Garden.  They smell really good and they ship fast. 

If you want to use the oils topically or digest them, then I highly recommend DoTerra Essential Oils.  They are a little more expensive, but I know they are safe to use internally, (remember you need to make sure you can take that oil internally, do your RESEARCH), and to apply topically.  If you are interested in DoTerra Oils click here

Thought I should Introduce Myself

I haven't always been into fitness and eating healthy.  I have always struggled with my weight, and it has bothered me.  I would try to get healthy, but then just give up because I was always hungry and tired. This went on for all of my teenage years and most of my 20's.

It wasn't until I found out that I had type 2 diabetes.  That really scared me, and I didn't want to be on the medication, because of the way that it made me feel.  So I decided that it was now time to make that change and do something about it.  I slowly started to change my eating habits, and continued to exercise.  I successfully lost 30 pounds and became diabetes free within six months of being diagnosed.  I have now been diabetes free for three years, and I'm way excited about that.  I am still trying to get healthier and loose more weight, and at the same time, I'm trying to be body positive.  I post about my journey on Instagram and Facebook.  I am hoping that it will help to be more accountable.

I have a wonderful husband that I have been married to for over 13 years and I have an adorable 8 year old son.  I love to travel, spend time with my family, of course take photo's, write, read, workout, hike, camp and watch some of my favorite TV shows.
